Even though this week has returned to typical Portland Spring weather, the early heat this season has inspired us to focus on ICE CREAM in this newsletter! Everybody’s favorite topic right? The creativity of Portlanders can be seen in everything we do, and our local ice cream shops are no exception. Local favorites like Salt & Straw have gained notoriety beyond our city, but there are a lot of other purveyors of frozen treats that deserve a visit. Check out our recommendations below and map a spot to cool off on the next hot day!
- 82nd Avenue: Looking for a new way to eat your ice cream? Mojo Crepes is known for their Japanese crepes served with ice cream plus Asian fusion hot dogs and Taiwanese bubble tea.
- Alberta: Angel’s Donuts and Ice Cream is a family-run shop that focuses on classic flavors of frozen and fried desserts.
- Beaumont: Boozy nitro scoops sound like the stuff of dreams, but they exist! You can find them at Blind Ox. Speaking of making dreams reality, check out Beaux Berry. They make real fruit ice cream from locally sourced ingredients and even make their own sauces to top things off.
- Central Eastside: Ice Queen is the first plant-based popsicle shop in the world and was born out of the desire to share healthy and delicious goodies while simultaneously introducing people to more sustainable, plant-based options.
- Division/Clinton: Pinolo Gelato was launched in June of 2015 by Pisa-born native Sandro Paolini with the intention of reviving traditional Italian gelato-making.
- Downtown: For a taste of the island life, Wailua Shave Ice is a must. They make Hawaiian-style shave ice with creative flavors and fruit toppings served in a small, bustling space.
- Foster: You may know them for their Boba Tea, but have you had the egg waffle at Tea & Tea? Make it perfect with a scoop of chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla ice cream. Not only does Bodega PDX sell sub sandwiches, beer, snacks and more, they now have soft serve ice cream. Check out what is currently on rotation at this neighborhood convenience shop.
- Midway: EZ Freezy Frozen Yogurt is a family-owned company that has been serving froyo fans since 2012. They have a toppings bar which is very much a choose your own adventure experience!
- Multnomah Village: Nectar Frozen Yogurt Lounge offers a huge variety of froyo flavors and a fun, welcoming space to enjoy your scoop with friends. The Village Ice Cream Factory is the place to go for real, small-batch, fresh, handmade super-premium ice cream. They also offer sorbets, sherbets, milkshakes, malts, and other handmade treats.
- Northwest District: Eb & Bean is redefining frozen yogurt with organic, probiotic-rich dairy and non-dairy deliciousness that tastes exactly like soft serve ice cream. Fifty Licks is on a mission to make ice cream from scratch, with local ingredients and tons of cage-free egg yolks for a luscious, rich texture.
- Pearl District: Little Chickpea breaks the mold by being based entirely on the non-dairy, gluten-free, soy-free, nut-free, non-GMO, sustainably produced, environmentally friendly chickpea.
Cool Moon Ice Cream is a coffee bar and parlor featuring traditional and unique ice cream flavors made in small batches. - St Johns: Coffee and ice cream, together at last! Affogato, is named after the Italian creation of combining a scoop of ice cream with a shot of espresso. Yum! And if you live on this side of town Beaux Berry, mentioned above, has a shop in this area as well.
