Portland and the rest of the country have an opportunity to end systemic racism and police brutality. Two weeks of protest have gotten the attention of elected officials, who are taking the first steps toward meaningful police reform. But reform movements have failed before. Portland’s most overpoliced communities cannot afford yet another false start, which is why we urge you to follow the lead of Portland’s black leaders and grassroots community nonprofits. Venture Portland encourages you to follow and support the great work of these organizations:

Black Lives Matter PDX shares information about local protests, increases awareness of racial injustice and holds city and state officials accountable.

The Black Resilience Fund raises money to help Black families and individuals pay rent, bills, get groceries, reduce debt, and more.

Black United Fund of Oregon assists in the social and economic development of Oregon’s underserved communities and contributes to a broader understanding of ethnic and culturally diverse groups.

Brown Hope provides a bold vision of how to create platforms for Black, Brown, and Indigenous people to be seen, to love, and to lead.

Don’t Shoot PDX specializes in education, legal support and outreach programs focused on changing police policy and ending systemic discrimination.

Elevate Oregon builds relationships with urban youth to promote education, self-reliance and leadership.

The Portland NAACP focuses on ensuring the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons and eliminating racial hatred and discrimination.

Self Enhancement Inc. is dedicated to guiding underserved youth to realize their full potential. Working with schools, families, and partner community organizations, SEI provides support, guidance, and opportunities to achieve personal and academic success.

Soul District Business Association promotes and advocates for growth and opportunity, representing over 500 diverse businesses in North/Northeast Portland.

Urban League of Portland empowers African-Americans and others to achieve equality in education, employment, health, economic security and quality of life.
