While we may not agree on everything, one thing is certain – everyone loves pizza. So much so that we dedicate the entire month of October to the delectable dish. While Portland once lagged behind many of its peers for years in the pizza department, these days there are plenty of places in town that would give New York or Chicago a run for their money. Celebrate National Pizza Month with a trip (or three) to your favorite neighborhood purveyor of pies. We have listed a few below to get you started.
- Beaumont: Amalfi’s is one of Portland’s oldest pizza restaurants and hosts live music under their outdoor tent several nights a week, while Pizzacato is celebrating October with a special butternut and pancetta pie.
- Belmont Area: Baby Doll Pizza brings New York to SE Stark Street with house-made dough, sauces, and cheeses cooked to perfection.
- Division/Clinton: Virtuous Pie specializes in vegan pizza and ice cream, while Scottie’s Pizza Parlor donates to local causes like Liberation Literacy and Sisters of the Road.
- Foster Area: With at least 5 pizzerias, the Foster “pizza corridor” has something for everyone, but two of our favorites are Char Pizza, for rustic, thin crust “Portland-style” pies, and Assembly Brewing for some of the best Detroit-style pizza in town.
- Gateway: Want to bake your pizza at home? Zappo’s offers both take-and-bake and hot-and-fresh pizza – your choice!
- Lloyd: Pizza Schmizza has a variety of ‘meatza’, chicken, and veggie pizzas plus their H.E.L.P. charity provides grant funding to local schools.
- Midway: Pizza Baron has been dishing up fresh-made pies in East Portland since 1983. Newcomer Stumptown Cuisine offers delicious pizza, sandwiches, burgers, and wings for pickup up or delivery.
- Montavilla: East Glisan Pizza Lounge dishes up both thin-crust and Detroit-style pies plus house-made vegan options, while Flying Pie Pizzeria has been serving their secret recipe to Portlanders since 1984.
- Lents: See what the buzz is about at Humdinger Pizza, which uses fresh vegetables and handmade dough. Don’t forget to have a drink at Shifters right next door.
- Multnomah Village: Tastebud began as a food cart but now serves wood-fired, rustic pizzas, with heavy vegetable toppings out of a former antique shop in Southwest Portland.
- Northwest District: Escape From New York Pizza is about as close as you can get to a New York Pizza experience – a thin crust, a long, narrow space filled with photos and posters and a friendly staff.
- Stadium District: Hot Lips Pizza has been serving Portland since 1984 and even has their own line of fruit sodas.
- St. Johns: You can’t miss Signal Station’s iconic building and their ‘Slice-it-forward’ program provides free meals for neighbors in need.
