With nearly 70 breweries, Portland is known as ‘Beervana.’ Ask any Portland beer lover their favorite style and you are most likely to hear ‘IPA,’ the hoppy style that many local breweries hang their hats on. In fact, the American version of the IPA was pioneered by former Portland brewery, Bridgeport. August 3rd is National IPA Day, which began as a modest online celebration of the style but has grown into a global celebration of craft beer. As local breweries and pubs continue to close at a rapid pace, they need your support more than ever. Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Beaumont: Since 1979, McPeet’s Portland Pub has been providing cold beer to Portlanders on NE Fremont Street. Right now they have 5 IPAs on tap to choose from!
  • Foster: Serving Foster denizens for more than a decade, Unlimited IPA is a bottle shop that specializes in IPAs. During your visit, you’re likely to catch one of their pop-up art shows, live comedy, or just some good tunes spinning on the record player.
  • Greater Brooklyn: Ruse brews small-batch, flavorful, and thoughtfully-crafted beers, including several IPAs. They even work with local artists and musicians to design beers paired with their art for concept events and beer releases.
  • Hillsdale: Located in the heart of historic Hillsdale, Sasquatch Brewing is also the social center of the community. Their Woodboy IPA is piney, citrusy, hoppy, and bitter.
  • Lents: If you are looking for food to pair with your IPA, Flipside Bar and Carts has an array of global cuisines to satisfy all of your cravings as well as a wide variety of craft beer, wine, and cocktails.
  • Lloyd: For a side of sports with your IPA, visit Spirit of ’77, which always has games on multiple screens, food, and cocktails.
  • Midway: With a full tap list and a carefully crafted menu of American and Irish-inspired food, Whelan’s Irish Pub is the place to be in Midway for both Guinness and IPAs.
  • Mississippi Ave: Whether you are looking for a big hoppy IPA like Cloud Ripper, or a fruity lighter option like When I Froot, Stormbreaker Brewing has got you covered.
  • Montavilla: Threshold Brewing and Blending specializes in IPAs and experimental ales and sources their hops locally. Try Infinite Realms, a Hazy IPA brewed with Necataron and Phantasm hops for tropical aroma and flavor!
  • Stadium District: With 22 taps, you are sure to find something to enjoy at Civic Taproom and Bottleshop. It’s the perfect place to stop for a beer before or after Timbers and Thorns games.
  • Williams District: Visit Migration Brewing for plenty of IPA options. One of our favorites is “Straight Outta Portland,” a lovely west coast IPA.
